چکیده

D U R I N G the past quarter of a century, aeromedical investigators have succeeded with great ingenuity in simulating on the ground nearly all the conditions and stresses to which the pilot of an aircraft or of a space vehicle could be exposed. Gigantic human centrifuges and rocket sleds have been created to produce high accelerations at controlled rates of onset and decay. Elaborate low pressure chambers now simulate any desired condition of temperatu,re, humidity, and altitude, including even explosive decompression. This makes possible a thorough and more comfortable observation of the subject's physiologic reactions than has been 9ossi'ble in actual flight. However for studying weightlessness, one of the most challenging problems of

Spatial orientation and posture during and following weightlessness: human experiments on Spacelab Life Sciences 1.

The 4 payload crew members of the Spacelab Life Sciences 9-day space flight in 1991 were subjected to limited vestibular testing in flight as well as pre and post flight. Major differences in individual "perceptual style" appeared in their reaction to the visual-vestibular stimuli in the rotating dome experiment, and especially in the extent to which nondirectional tactile cues served to anchor...

Soviet experiments aimed at investigating the influence of space flight factors on the physiology of animals and man.

Results are given of biological experiments on space ship-satellites II, III, IV and V, and of scientific investigations made during the flights of Cosmonauts Gagarin and Titov aboard space ships Vostok I and Vostok II. Physiological reactions to the action of the flight stress-factors are not of a pathological character. In the post-flight period no alterations in health conditions of either c...

Changes in lower limb volume in humans during parabolic flight.

Variations in gravity [head-to-foot acceleration (Gz)] induce hemodynamic alterations as a consequence of changes in hydrostatic pressure gradients. To estimate the contribution of the lower limbs to blood pooling or shifting during the different gravity phases of a parabolic flight, we measured instantaneous thigh and calf girths by using strain-gauge plethysmography in five healthy volunteers...

Orientation illusions in spaceflight.

Investigations of spontaneous illusory reactions were carried out during space-flights of various durations by ANKETA questionnaires (104 cosmonauts). From a total of 104 cosmonauts, 24, in addition, used a dictaphone to record a verbal description of the illusions and their sensations on tape. Analysis of data generated by ANKETA and the tapes thus recorded have shown that during adaptation to...

The vestibulo-ocular reflex of hypergravity rats.

The vertebrate vestibular system detects linear (otolith organs) and angular (semicircular canals) acceleration. The function of the otolith system is twofold, 1: perception of linear acceleration of the head, and 2: assessment of the spatial orientation of the head relative to the vector of gravity. Because of the latter function, a change of gravity will affect the vestibular input which, in ...
